What is a Military Academy?
It is one of India’s oldest military colleges, which prepares officers for the Indian Army. It was founded in 1932 on the advice of a military council led by General (later Field Marshal) Sir Philip Chetwode and is situated in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. IMA has grown from a class of forty male cadets in 1932 to a sanctioned capacity of 1,650 today. The length of the cadet training program varies from three to sixteen months, depending on the requirements for admission. Cadets at IMA are permanently commissioned as Lieutenants into the armed forces upon completion of their coursework.
